Alice responded, “Scared,” when the judges asked her how she felt as she took the stage. Before hitting the stage, Alice admitted to interviewers that she had struggled with stage fright her entire life.

Alice’s anxiety stemmed from her fear of the judges, believing that their rejection of her was an indication of her inadequacy. The audience held their breath as her music started.

The competitor decided to perform the jazz standard “My Funny Valentine,” which was previously Chet Baker’s hallmark song. There was an uneasy silence in the stadium during the opening notes.

The opening line, “My funny Valentine, Sweet comic Valentine,” was then sung by Alice. She sounded a little unsteady. Simon Cowell’s head was notably down. Maybe he didn’t want to stare at Alice and exacerbate her anxiety.

But as Alice reached the lyric, “You make me smile with my heart,” she turned up the volume and hit unexpected notes. Simon raised his head and grinned.

Throughout the song, Alice used arm motions that were reminiscent of Nina Simone’s live performances. She left Simon and the other judges speechless. Alice received a standing ovation from the crowd and all four judges for her seductive performance of “My Funny Valentine,” which also earned her a trip to the next round.
