A heartwarming and courageous story has emerged, showcasing the bravery of Chase Poust, a seven-year-old boy who became the hero of his family after a frightening waterside incident. The event took place on Memorial Day weekend, May 28th, near Mandarin Point on the St. Johns River in Jacksonville, Florida.

Chase was out boating with his father, Steven, and his four-year-old sister, Abigail, planning for a relaxing day of fishing and swimming. However, their day took a terrifying turn when the river’s current proved much stronger than expected.

While swimming near the anchored boat, little Abigail, who was wearing a life jacket, was pulled away from the vessel by the forceful current. Seeing his sister drift further from safety, Chase sprang into action.

In an emotional interview with WJXT, Chase recalled, “The current was so strong… my sister let go. So, I let go of the boat and grabbed her, and then, I was stuck.”

Realizing the growing danger, Steven jumped into the water to help his children. However, the current continued to carry Abigail further away. With overwhelming emotion, Steven shared his fear, “I told them I loved them because I wasn’t sure what was going to happen. I tried to stick with both of them, but I wore myself out.”

It was then that Chase made a heroic decision. Without a life jacket and battling exhaustion, he bravely swam for an entire hour to reach land. Using a mix of the doggie paddle and floating on his back to conserve energy, Chase fought against the current, determined to save his family.

Once on dry land, the young hero ran to find help. His actions ultimately saved his family’s lives.

Steven expressed immense gratitude, saying, “I screamed for help at the top of my lungs and waved my arms, and sure enough, someone heard us. Little man made it to shore and got help, and that’s what saved our lives.”
