Colin Farrell offers fans a rare glimpse of life with his 20-year-old son James, who was born with Angelman syndrome, a neuro-genetic disorder.\n\n\n\n The Golden Globe winner says James \u2013 the \u201cTom Selleck\u201d look-alike with a \u201clovely big\u201d mustache \u2013 is the inspiration behind the newly launched Colin Farrell Foundation that supports and celebrates people with special needs and their families.\n\n\n\n Keep reading to learn about Farrell and why he launched the foundation!\n\n\n\n In June 2003, award-winning actor Colin Farrell led a team of athletes into the stadium at Croke Park for the opening ceremony of the 2003 Special Olympics, which he continues to support.\n\n\n\n \u201cWe were at our best,\u201d Farrell, 48, tells the Irish Independent. \u201c\u2026they were the stars of the story. There\u2019s nowhere in the world that I\u2019ve experienced anything like it.\u201d\n\n\n\n Almost a decade ago, Irish actor Colin Farrell led athletes into Los Angeles Coliseum for the 2015 #SpecialOlympics World Summer Games Opening Ceremony. Fatherhood for me is the ultimate success,\u201d Farrell told the Irish Examiner in 2004.\n\n\n\n Colin Farrell is starting a foundation to help children and young adults with disabilities prepare for greater independence through advocacy, education and innovative programs.\n\n\n\n His son James has a rare debilitating disorder called Angelman Syndrome.\n\n\n\n \u201cI want the world to be kind\u2026 pic.twitter.com\/sUjc5dOrpa\n\n\n\n \u2014 Film Updates (@FilmUpdates) August 7, 2024\n\n\n\n\n James was about 18 months old when his parents noticed that he \u201cjust wasn\u2019t hitting benchmarks.\u201d\n\n\n\n \u201cI thought he was just a chill baby,\u201d the In Bruges actor tells People in an August 2024 interview. \u201cHe wasn\u2019t sitting up or crawling. We knew something was up developmentally.\u201d\n\n\n\n In 2007, Farrell revealed his son, earlier misdiagnosed as having cerebral palsy, was diagnosed with Angelman syndrome.\n\n\n\n According to the Mayo Clinic, Angelman syndrome is a rare condition that causes \u201cdelayed development, problems with speech and balance, mental disability, and, sometimes, seizures.\u201d Symptoms include intellectual disability, little or no speech, and difficulty walking, the clinic notes. I burst into tears. It was amazing. To be told that he may never walk and see those first steps, I\u2019ll just never forget it. It was so overwhelmingly beautiful.\u201d\n\n\n\n The actor went on to say that his nonverbal son, big brother to Henry (born in 2009 to ex Alicja Bachleda-Cur\u00fas), has a \u201cgood life\u201d and is a \u201chappy young man.\u201d\n\n\n\n He adds, \u201cI\u2019m proud of him every day. I think he\u2019s magic.\u201d\n\n\n\n In September, James turns 21.\n\n\n\n \u201cOnce your child turns 21, they\u2019re kind of on their own. All the safeguards that are put in place, special ed classes, that all goes away, so you\u2019re left with a young adult who should be an integrated part of our modern society and more often than not is left behind,\u201d the Miami Vice star tells People, adding that he wants the \u201cworld to be kind to James,\u201d and treat him with respect.\n\n\n\n Describing James as a \u201ccheeky, \u201cbold\u201d and \u201cbright\u201d young man who\u2019s ready to \u201cspread his wings,\u201d\u00a0The Batman\u00a0actor tells the\u00a0Irish Independent. \u201cHe\u2019s strong now, he\u2019s six foot. He was always like a beanpole, but he\u2019s filled out a bit and got a lovely big Ronnie (mustache) on him. He looks like Tom Selleck! He\u2019s brilliant \u2013 he\u2019s just a gorgeous young man, you know.\u201d\n\n\n\n Expressing his confidence in his son, Farrell continues, \u201cAnd he\u2019s in a really good place, and I\u2019m delighted that he\u2019s ready to get out in the world now and begin to be able to spread his wings and be a part of programs.\u201d\n\n\n\n Helping his son as he transitions into greater independence, The Lobster actor recently launched the Colin Farrell Foundation, which aims to transform \u201cthe lives of individuals and families living with intellectual disability through education, awareness, advocacy, and innovative programs.\u201d\n\n\n\n \u201cThe only reason I\u2019m speaking is I can\u2019t ask James if he wants to do this,\u201d he says, adding that he believes if his son knew \u201cdoing this could help families and other young adults who live with special needs, he would say, \u2018Dad, what are you talking about? Why are you even asking me? It\u2019s a no-brainer.\u2019\u201d\n\n\n\n He adds, \u201cSo that\u2019s why we\u2019re doing it.
