A heartbreaking tragedy has shaken Miami-Dade County after 27-year-old Deputy Devin Jaramillo was ambushed and killed while responding to what appeared to be a routine traffic crash in Southwest Miami-Dade.
Authorities say Deputy Jaramillo, who served with the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office, was targeted in retaliation for a previous call. When he arrived at the scene near Southwest 128th Street and 122nd Avenue, two suspects attacked him without warning.
“He was brutally attacked and he was murdered,” Sheriff Rosie Cordero Stutz said in an emotional statement Friday evening. Witnesses say shots were fired, and the young deputy was struck before he could defend himself.
Good Samaritans immediately called 911 after hearing the gunfire. Deputy Jaramillo was rushed to the hospital, but despite the best efforts of doctors, he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
One of the suspects was taken into custody at the scene, while the second reportedly took his own life moments later.
The sheriff’s office and local community are now mourning the loss of a young officer who gave his life protecting others. Tributes are pouring in from across Florida, as flags fly at half-staff in his honor.
Deputy Jaramillo’s death marks one of the most devastating moments for Miami-Dade law enforcement this year — a reminder of the dangers officers face every single day, even during what seems like routine calls.
Rest easy, Deputy. Your service and sacrifice will never be forgotten.
