Afghan Nationals Linked to Two Separate Police Shootings in DC and Virginia, Authorities Confirm

Two violent incidents months apart — one in Washington, DC, and another in Fairfax, Virginia — are now being linked through the involvement of two Afghan nationals, according to emerging reports. Both cases have raised questions about public safety, vetting procedures, and the circumstances surrounding each confrontation.

The most recent event took place on November 26 near the White House, where two National Guard members were critically injured during a shooting. The suspect, identified as Rahmanullah Lakanwal, reportedly drove from across the country before the attack. The victims, Pfc. Andrew Wolfe, 24, and Spc. Sarah Beckstrom, 20, had been sworn in less than a day earlier as part of heightened security efforts. Both remain hospitalized as they receive ongoing medical care.

Authorities say Lakanwal entered the United States in 2021. His motives remain under investigation, and federal officials have not yet released additional details about what may have led to the attack. The incident has drawn significant attention due to its proximity to the White House and the involvement of newly assigned National Guard personnel.

A separate case earlier this year involved another Afghan national whose actions similarly escalated into violence. On April 23 in Fairfax, Virginia, officers conducted what began as a routine traffic stop involving 36-year-old Jamal Wali. Body camera footage later released by the Fairfax County Police Department showed Wali expressing anger and frustration, referencing the Taliban before the encounter suddenly turned deadly.
